He was born in Siberia, a place that Judo trainer Victor Tatarkin describes as, “Cold but dry.” He arrived in the US in 1992 at the age of 32, now 52, and recently a father for the second time, he began his life in combat sports in Russia learning Sambo, a Russian form of Judo that is a very popular discipline there. The word “SAMBO” is an acronym for SAMooborona Bez Oruzhiya, which in English means “self-defense without weapons.
“When Judo arrived in my country,” he recalled. “I started to practice it because I liked it.”

He has been training people in Judo and Sambo for the past fifteen years here in the US, “After I stopped competing.” He has been a member of the training staff at the Fight Factory since it opened its doors four years ago. He met his wife two years ago, Nadezda Emelianova, who also teaches Judo at the Fight Factory. She was a member of Russia’s Olympic Judo team, “She went to China for the 2008 Olympics, and she has competed in New York as well,” added Victor.”

In 1987, he graduated from the Pedagogical University, School of Physical Education and the Beginning Military Preparation. Since 1993 Victor wrestled in Sambo and Judo for the New York State Team (USA), winning the New York State Games five times.

His accomplishments are extensive as follows:
He has been a member of the American Amateur Sambo Federation – Member of Executive council board since 2003. He is the designated Head Coach of the USA Sambo Team, responsible for the team’s technical committee.
In November of 2008 Tatarkin was awarded a medal for his significant contributions to FIAS (Federation International Amateur de Sambo) in the global development of Sambo.

He is also the head national coach of the U.S. Sambo and Combat Sambo, and since 2011; plus he has served as President of the New York State Sambo Federation.

Mr. Tatarkin is a USSR Master of Sports in Sambo (№ 156984), Judo (№ 155084), and Self-defense without weapons (№ 244508); as well as a Medalist in MMA – World Championship in Ultimate Fighting.
He won the World Championship in Ultimate Fighting and World Extreme Fighting on November 19, 1995 in Willington, North Carolina. In May 2003, for his achievements in sports and active development of Sambo in the United States, American Amateur Sambo Federation (AASF) awarded Mr. Tatarkin the title of Honorable Master of the USA in Sambo Wrestling.

A respected author and teacher, he authored the book; “Combat Section of Self-Defense without Weapons”; a manual for instructors in Law Enforcement Ministry, KDG, and Special Military Forces.
The following are some of his greatest achievements in Martial Arts: Four-Time Champion of the United States in Sambo, 1995 / 1996 / 2002 / 2003; FIAS World Open Sambo Championship, first place among seniors and first place among Masters, July 4, 2001, Albuquerque, New Mexico. He is a four time Judo Champion in the Empire State Games, New York; World Masters Judo Championship –first place in 2001, Phoenix, Arizona; Fifth International Liberty Bell Judo Classics Tournament, First Place, year 1998; AM – CAN International Judo Games finishing in first place in 1997; Buffalo,/ International Liberty Bell Judo Classics Tournament, first place; In 1996 he was twice Champion of the International Judo Championship – New York Athletic Club – 1994, 1995. He placed first in the 29th Championship of the East Coast of the United States.
Tatarkin was also USSR Master of Sport in Sambo, Judo, and hand-to-hand combat. He was also Champion of the “Trud” (Russian Newspaper) and “Zenith” Sports Unions in Sambo and Judo, as well as Champion of the National Judo Championship, in Roshal City.

He was Champion of the Special Police Forces “Dynamo” and the Armed Forced of the USSR, and placed fourth in the USSR Cup Tournament in Sambo (Kstovo City).

He was also National Estonia Champion in Sambo and Judo, and winner in the USSR, the Special Police Forces “Dynamo” in Sambo for the National Team of Estonia.
